Aesthletics Artist Statement: Final Wiki Post (Late Wiki posts for Nov 28th and Nov 30th)

I originally considered a couple of ideas for the final project, these included—a) create 100 holiday cards with various poor quality Santa Claus images/ haikus on the back which could be circulated through the mail to add to the metaphorical piling debris of Christmas cards people stash during the holiday season and b) re-work the Humanities Department into the E-Lit Department to make an argument about the current Humanities/ Education System.

The idea that I went with was to create an alternative art-fitness guide—inspired on Troemel’s ‘aesthlete’ from Art After Social Media—which was edited and reworked from ping-pong articles taken the website ThoughtCo. Using critical sources including Craig Dworkin’s Tectonic Writing, Florian Cramer's Post Digital Writing, Megan N. Liberty’s Reading as Art and Publishing as Artistic Practice, Aesthletics uses techniques from E-Lit and Post-Digital Lit including deformance, post-digital writing and post-digital object production via printmaking. Finally, Aesthletic’s argues that the contemporary artistic process—which relies on “fast-paced attention economy” of social media—is performed or rather played as a game of its own.

After creating 100 Haikus in Defense of the Poor Image, I fell in love with the simple, old school techniques of the Deformed Humanities and wanted to create another deformative work. Inspired by Craig Dworkin’s Tectonic Grammar, Aesthletics uses deformance to replace key words like Ping-Pong, player, ball, racket, etc with their appropriate new context: social media, artist, post, device, etc. Similarly to Tectonic Grammar, Aesthletics uses deformance to emphasize the materiality of a non-material object (grammar, social media post) by using language that constantly describes the subject in physical motion. For example, read chapter ‘Speed of a Social Media Post.’ This effect provides the original work with a new poetic context—as ping-pong becomes a metaphor for the artistic process.

Similarly, I wanted Aesthletics to embody post-digital writing—as defined by Florian Cramer—“materiality, craftsmanship and personal exchange” by turning a deformance work and into a super sleek, utilitarian print guide. To legitimize this process I experimented with a few of the most elegant, ‘post-digital-esque’ typefaces I could download for free. Overwhelmed with choice, I settled on a Berlin-originating typeface called Baton. I opted for a minimalistic cover page with a black rubber ping-pong paddle against an all white backdrop. If publishing goes correctly, the backside cover of the book will feature the red rubber side of the paddle to complete the design. By taking the time to consider book aesthetic, I hoped to also demonstrate the argument Megan N. Liberty presents in her article Reading as Art, which is that “the act of publishing is an artistic product over a means of production” and “through the rich, tactile experience of the page the act of reading is a work of art.”

Finally, the book embraces reading as an act of art while commenting on the contemporary status of art after social media. Adding to Brad Troemel’s metaphor, Aesthletics argues that contemporary art is a popularity game. Ping-Pong—which requires great attention, technical control and ability to make quick strategic plays—mimics the landscape of Social Media, where artists use the same skill-set to create content and win popularity. The erratically quick motion of the ping-pong ball also mirrors the speed of content, which is constantly in motion—rallied back and forth by users from infinite parts of the Internet.

I laughed out loud a few times while editing these articles—most of the passage reworkings unfolded very organically and hope they at least induce a chuckle. For the parts that were difficult, I tried to embrace the creative challenge and not delete any of the material. I’m looking forward to flipping through the print copy and the first book I’ve published—which is exciting. If the print turns out well, I will hide copies in the bookstores of major art galleries across Los Angeles, beginning from the Hammer Museum, Getty, MOCA and on and on and on...
I laughed out loud a few times while editing these articles—most of the passage reworkings unfolded very organically. For the parts that were difficult, I tried to embrace the creative challenge and not delete any of the material. I’m looking forward to flipping through the print copy and the first book I’ve published—which is exciting. If the print turns out well, I will hide copies in the bookstores of major art galleries across Los Angeles, beginning from the Hammer Museum, Getty, MOCA and on and on…

For example, read chapter ‘Speed of a Social Media Post.’ This effect provides the original work with a new poetic context—ping-pong is a metaphor for the contemporary artistic process.

The erratically quick motion of the ping-pong ball also mirrors the speed of content, which is constantly in motion—rallied back and forth from infinite parts of the Internet.

I laughed out loud a few times while editing these articles—most of the passage reworkings unfolded very organically. For the parts that were difficult, I tried to embrace the creative challenge and not delete any of the material. I’m looking forward to flipping through the print copy and the first book I’ve published—which is exciting. Rather than introduce electronic literature or “e-lit” as a distinct literary category, ELIT WIKI wonders if it’s still possible to consider literature beyond the electronic circuits that characterize the networked present. The creation and study of literature today is facilitated by a range of digital formats and networked consoles, each of which introduce new practices of production, circulation, reception, and reading. Alongside these transformations, this wiki explores a range of new literary genres inhabiting, for example, computer scripts, image macros, flash movies, social media, hypertext bandcamp releases, interactive applications, and print on demand books. Thinking through the present, ELIT WIKI examines the history and future of literature through the everyday experience of computers and electronic devices. From the history of digital poetics to recent internet publications, we track the development of literature under the influence of computation up to works published in the present, as they emerge online. In lockstep, this wiki considers the category of “electronic literature” as a way to think about historical works remediated to the internet, in a wide range of (post-)digital formats. The wiki features short pages in an open format, which may be critical or creative in form, developed in conversation with the editors. No previous experience in programming, poetry, or literature is required to read these pages.

This wiki surveys the development and current state of electronic literature, from the popularity of hypertext fiction in the 1980's to the present, focusing on a range of emergent genres. It also discusses the central critical issues raised by electronic literature, pointing out that there is significant overlap with the print tradition. At the same time, the essay argues that the practices, texts, procedures, and processual nature of electronic literature require new critical models and new ways of playing and interpreting the works. E-Lit WIki is not a systematic attempt to survey and summarize the fast-changing field of electronic literature, artists, designers, writers, critics—instead, it imagines itself a playful engagement with the forms and platforms of the present.
I experimented with New Hive over the weekend and created a mood-board/ collage. I titled it 'an Uber pool during rush hour.' I'm surprised that NewHive isn't as popular as other sites like tumblr or Instagram. While navigating the site, I found that much of the content was more creative that the typical Internet 'art' you see on blogs. Then again, other blogs sites don't provide you with same tools for creating media that NewHive does. I liked that I was able to combine almost any imaginable form of digital media in one place. Despite being easy to use, I found that creating a visually appealing collage was harder than I anticipated. Many of my attempts of collages ended up being visually overcrowded or disjointed and I have trouble perfecting this part. I wanted to create a collage that evokes the conundrum of being a regular long-distance LA commuter and being jaded by Uber conversation. I had trouble finding good screenshots and GIFs related to the Uber app, so instead I utilized the few photos I saved on my phone. I used the Bob Dylan photo because I thought it his expression perfectly portrays the misery and misanthropy one feels staring into the savage glow of red break lights.

And I'd wonder If I'd see another highway...
I'm surprised that NewHive isn't as popular as other sites like tumblr or Instagram.
It also discusses the central critical issues raised by electronic literature, pointing out that there is significant overlap with the print tradition. The first work I visited was Arcade Fire's interactive video for "We Used to Wait" which uses google earth to flash real-life dizzying aerial views of your childhood neighborhood. This, along with Arcade Fire's characteristically cinematic songwriting, lulled me into nostalgia. It reminded me of another interactive music video they made for their song Reflektor which lets you click and drag beams of light reflecting off of mirrors as well as utilizes your laptop camera to insert your face into the climax of the video (when your image is "reflected" into a broken mirror). In the video, the digital interactive component is also used as a sort of ironic nod to the theme of the song--it's dystopic portrayal of life in the smart-phone age, as Win poses such questions as "we're so connected, but are we even friends?" At the time that I watched it--in 2013--I didn't know that this was a sub-genre of electronic literature and it's interesting to look back at it in this new context. In addition to this, I read a critical piece on Vaporwave as well as youtube streamed Macintosh Plus by Floral Shoppe, which is the first Vaporwave album. Upon first listening, I felt a juxtaposition of emotions--from soothed and numbed to at times uncomfortable and annoyed. This juxtaposition also seemed to run through the comments section with users reporting either feeling very relaxed, high or wanting to die.

The few first games I played were very nightmarish and anxiety inducing—these were A Wonderful Day at the Beach, Sun Garden and Horrible Forest. In choosing games, my instinct gravitated to more lighthearted and enticing titles expecting to be met with a stress-free game, however, most of the time, turned out to be the opposite. A Wonderful Day at the Beach invoked a sense of claustrophobia, frustration and grave doom while I was forced to helplessly watch my character drown into a pool of highlighter blue following every move. This was met with a cringe-inducting lo-fi droning loop, which became more merciless with every octave leap. I left the game feeling as if I had been trolled, before realizing that this must have been partly, if not the point of the game and then shortly discovered Pink Zone. Pink zone felt mind-numbingly warm and familiar—like experiencing boredom in the company of an old friend or like a worn-in fidget spinner. The hieroglyphic-like visuals give the game a primitive aesthetic (along with the sustained, primitive yowl in the distance during the melody of the soundtrack), which compliments the relaxed atmosphere. The pink-on-black color palette also feels very vapor-wave inspired. I think the music in this game is actually very brilliant and I was drawn to the analog textures of the drum-sequencer and synthesizers which flowed playfully throughout the many cadences of the song. All in all, I think it's funny that a game which was created for the sake of being relaxing actually aided me after unknowingly stumbling upon a game that was intentionally deceptive and uncomfortable.

Pink Zone was favorite game on the list. After A Wonderful Day at the Beach, some time to Chill Wander was exaclty what I needed.

This past lecture (Thursday, October 19th) we spent some time at the end of class playing online games. I really enjoyed playing the different games, but playing various games helped me realize what elements I prefer a game to have. These include: fun music, colorful visuals, and plenty of options to choose from. Fun music is important because it keeps the game entertaining, rather than making it feel boring or monotonous. Colorful visuals are equally important because they add intrigue and appeal to the game, which attracts people like myself. Lastly, I think it is important for a game to have various options to choose from because that way it can cater to all audiences. In other words, having options for people with different interests, as opposed to only a few options that are rather narrow-minded, enables all audiences to feel included and connected to the game. Therefore, when games had all of those three significant elements, I enjoyed the game a lot more (than when they lacked one or more of those qualities). For example, I was initially attracted to the Kesha game because I heard this game's music from the laptops of my classmates. Upon playing this game, I liked the layout as well as the music, but I felt that the content (the different questions and selections) was a bit lacking and did not cater to many audiences. For this reason, I found the Kesha game fun, but perhaps not one of my absolute favorites.

So many, yet so difficult to choose. How is it that artists make the choices that they do for their art? Is there a method of elimination? A shuffling of options? Do they merely flip a coin?

Art has always fascinated me. Mainly because I have no sense of direction when it comes to deciphering the meaning, but maybe that’s the point of it. Art forms are open for interpretation because depending on the person viewing the piece, they come from different backgrounds and therefore find different meaning. But is that the point? What if the point is to understand what the artist wants to convey? And if that’s the case, how are we supposed to figure that out?

After reading “Paragraphs on Conceptual Art,” Lewitt’s words strike me and make me question everything I’ve known. Art forms have concepts behind them – there are reasons for why artists do what they do. Whether it be the size of the piece, where objects are placed, what materials are used, how can we know what the true meaning is? Is there one at all? Sometimes, I find it an adventure to try and figure out what something means, but other times, it would be extremely helpful to get a push in the right direction. But I guess that’s what keeps art exciting, the element of surprise. In the meantime, I’ll be pondering what the true meaning of art is. In fact, what even makes art, art? Until next time.

What is not electronic literature today? see also: nothing? Rather than introduce electronic literature or “e-lit” as a distinct literary category, this course wonders if it’s still possible to consider literature beyond the electronic circuits that characterize the networked present. The creation and study of literature today is facilitated by a range of digital formats and networked consoles, each of which introduce new practices of production, circulation, reception, and reading. Alongside these transformations, we’ll explore a range of new literary genres inhabiting, for example, computer scripts, image macros, flash movies, social media, hypertext bandcamp releases, interactive applications, and print on demand books. Thinking through the present, this introduction examines the history and future of literature through the everyday experience of computers and electronic devices. From the history of digital poetics to recent internet publications, we’ll track the development of literature under the influence of computation up to works published in the present, as they emerge throughout the quarter. In lockstep, the course considers the category of “electronic literature” as a way to think about historical works remediated to the internet, in a wide range of (post-)digital formats. The course requires short weekly responses in an open format, as well as a mid-term and final assignment, which may be critical or creative in form, developed in conversation with the instructor. No previous experience in programming, poetry, or literature is required.
