i find myself returning to this piece i earlier composed ... the material was extracted from a website (a piece of e-lit in itself) that contains every tweet with the word &amp;quot;lonely&amp;quot; in it. it updates every thirty seconds or so and i copied and pasted the following tweets into a body of text: &lt;br /&gt;

i find myself wanting to do something with the poems of bukowski. one idea i had was to text message with people using lines from his poems. i'd screen shot the conversations and publish them into a book or do an iphone screen recording and make a video.&lt;br /&gt;

that's one way to use his work...or i could make him the instagram he never had...or find another way to use his poems in a piece of e-lit...&lt;br /&gt;

A synthesizer is an electronic musical instrument that generates electric signals that are converted to sound through amplifiers, speakers, headphones, etc.. E-Lit is like a synthesizer in that it converts digital material into literature through hypertext, chatterbots, interactive fiction, twitterature, emails, SMS, blogs, etc. Both E-Lit and synthesizers convert digital/electronic forms into high art––conceptual art, even. What’s more, for both synthesizers and E-Lit, the creator is required to traverse through the literature/music in a digital setting, making the very use of the medium part of the artful exchange. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
One might question the analogy I established above and wonder why I did not say “A computer is to E-Lit as a synthesizer is to music.” This would seem logical, as you have each electronic device producing the forms of high art, however, I do not support the typical designation of E-lit as an sub-genre of literature. Instead, I have come to view E-Lit as the vehicle or medium in which virtual forms are transformed into literature. Deeming E-Lit as a “sub-genre” of literature seems to undermine E-Lit’s own authority and high quality. By considering E-Lit as the very vehicle in which one makes literature itself, all subjects are treated with the same degree of respect.&lt;br /&gt;

After being exposed to and enthralled by Alejandro Miguel Justino Crawford's ''Diana Hamilton's Dreams,'' I was reminded of a 2017 South African video game, ''n Verlore Verstand,'' that is accessible on several different consoles such as Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC. Developed by Skobbejak Games, '''n Verlore Verstand'' is Afrikaans for &amp;quot;a lost mind,&amp;quot; and this sense of unhinged madness is the very essence of the game. As ''Diana Hamilton's Dreams'' attempts to unlock the subconscious and 'approach the truth of dreams...through the navigation and connection and layering of sounds and stories that, half-recognized, slip away when we try to tie them down...' (Kill Screen), ''n Verlore Verstand'' similarly seeks to journey through an uncanny, subterranean consciousness, one that falls outside of our immediate focal awareness. While gameplay varies across the different levels/worlds, from walking through barren and desolate fields to navigating murky and dungeon-like labyrinthine corridors, the fundamental theme is this realm of the unknown. &lt;div&gt;Reading The Library of Babel made me reconsider everything I know about the English [[language]] and what we as humans hold as knowledge. We associate a set of arbitrary characters with specific [[feeling]], sounds, smells, sights and meanings and, over time, develop various accepted combinations of characters that transcend the arbitrary position of language to create understanding and connection. One of the things that struck me the hardest in this piece was the idea that everything we know or will eventually come to know about our universe and our situations within in are entirely dependent on this arbitrary set of characters and how we assign [[meaning]] to them. Going further, I wonder if, without language, our world would cease to exist. While I know that it would physically remain, what's the purpose of objects and living beings if we have no ways to [[communicate our experiences]] or articulate what each of these objects is. This realization makes me consider the greater [[purpose]] of The Library of Babel, itself. What is the point of a library full of gibberish? One possible reason is to precisely maintain the arbitrary figures of a language and to organize them into every possible combination so that we may understand the past, present and future on the deepest level possible. With regard to that notion, the piece is quite possibly meant to stem our thinking out from what we know to be true to what could ever possibly be true or false, creating a tree of understanding similar to the connections between these WikiLinks. Now, however, we have inserted video games into the genre of electronic literature. What, if anything, makes a video game literary? As a combination of the visual enterprise of film and the innovative structure of graphic novels, video games are able to do things with narrative that no other medium has done before. For many, the very appeal of video games lies in the sense of control that the player holds. What you can read from the pages from a novel, you can instead moderate for yourself in a story-based video game. This provides players with a new relationship toward the characters and story that cannot be experienced through written means—they feel as if they have some governance over how the story progresses and what happens. &lt;br /&gt;

But can all video games be literature? This I am still trying to decipher. Jason Nelson’s “game, game, game, and again game” is at once literary, for juxtaposed against the drawings and animations are written excerpts that underlie the gameplay itself. Likewise, Juliet Escoria’s “Into the Woods: A Moving Picture Book” constitutes both a video game and piece of literature as it is interspersed with text, moving images, and player controls. But what about &amp;quot;Call of Duty?&amp;quot; Is there anything literary about flipping through menu screens to customize a sniper rifle? Or joining a massive multiplayer lobby where trash-talking abounds? Or getting rewarded for killing an enemy with a triumphant headshot? Wouldn’t I like to know…&lt;/div&gt;</summary>

&lt;div&gt;Full disclosure, when I first enrolled in the course I was not really sure what exactly electronic literature was. The initial computer-generated poems that we saw at the beginning of the first class spoke spoke volumes to me about what e-lit is and what is tries to be in light of which factors. When computers began to emerge (when my father became fascinated by them and went on to create maintenance programs for Chevron not knowing his son would use these wonderful machines to write low-budget screenplays) it makes sense that while the world became caught up in the technical tasks they could accomplish, artists immediately tried to make them modes of expression. Expression for themselves via the new technology? Or expression for the technology via the artist? These are [[questions]] that fascinate me and everyone else in the class I'm sure but I can only imagine the contempt these early e-lit artists faced when they tried to make these revolutionary machines make poems. Reading Funkhouser's academic breakdown of the stages of e-lit in it's early days almost feels satirical to me because I can't conceive of such work being taken seriously beyond a cool party trick. The actual payout of the page makes the article feel even more dated even though it is only eleven years old. The words feel drier as now we have the means to create striking examples of the text and simple graphics he describes in the article. If someone from the 50's were to see the visual Library of Babel, could they deny how visually interesting and academic the work is? I'd hope not.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>

A synthesizer is an electronic musical instrument that generates electric signals that are converted to sound through amplifiers, speakers, headphones, etc. E-Lit is like a synthesizer in that it converts digital material into literature through hypertext, chatterbots, interactive fiction, twitterature, emails, SMS, blogs, etc. Both E-Lit and synthesizers convert digital/electronic forms into high art––conceptual art, even. What’s more, for both synthesizers and E-Lit, the creator is required to traverse through the literature/music in a digital setting, making the very use of the medium part of the artful exchange. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
One might question the analogy I established above and wonder why I did not say “A computer is to E-Lit as a synthesizer is to music.” This would seem logical, as you have each electronic device producing the forms of high art, however, I do not support the typical designation of E-lit as an sub-genre of literature. Instead, I have come to view E-Lit as the vehicle or medium in which virtual forms are transformed into literature. Deeming E-Lit as a “sub-genre” of literature seems to undermine E-Lit’s own authority and high quality. By considering E-Lit as the very vehicle in which one makes literature itself, all subjects are treated with the same degree of respect.&lt;br /&gt;

At the same time, the essay argues that the practices, texts, procedures, and processual nature of electronic literature require new critical models and new ways of playing and interpreting the works. E-Lit WIki is not a systematic attempt to survey and summarize the fast-changing field of electronic literature, artists, designers, writers, critics—instead, it imagines itself a playful engagement with the forms and platforms of the present. What is not electronic literature today? Rather than introduce electronic literature or “e-lit” as a [[distinct]] literary [[category]], this course wonders if it’s still possible to consider literature [[beyond]] the electronic circuits that characterize the networked present. The [[creation]] and study of literature today is facilitated by a range of [[digital]] formats and networked [[consoles]], each of which introduce [[new]] practices of production, circulation, reception, and reading. Alongside these [[transformations]], we’ll explore a range of new literary genres inhabiting, for example, computer scripts, image macros, flash movies, social media, bandcamp releases, [[interactive]] applications, and print on demand books. Thinking through the present, this introduction examines the history and future of literature through the everyday experience of computers and electronic devices. From the history of digital poetics to recent internet publications, we’ll track the development of literature under the influence of computation up to works published in the present, as they emerge throughout the quarter. In lockstep, the course considers the category of “electronic literature” as a way to think about historical works remediated to the internet, in a wide range of (post-)digital formats. The course requires short weekly responses in an open format, as well as a mid-term and final assignment, which may be critical or creative in form, developed in conversation with the instructor.
