To condense all that I've learned in this class into a single project is nothing short of a challenge. At so many points in the quarter, I felt the creative works (and yes, even the critical works) speak to me on a level that was so engaging that I was left wanting to create my own e-lit babies to release into the great wide digital world, however, I don't deny feeling more than a little bit stumped now on what to create for my final project since the ideas/inspirations/possibilities are endless. There are only a few key elements and limitations in place to limit my thinkspace: the plot/story should be the driving force not the medium (especially since I'm not at all literate in any form of coding). the medium should develop/progress/change/interact in some way with the story, and the plot itself should be compelling enough to be considered food for thought. I'm tempted to create another twine but I want to push my creative boundaries and try a different medium of communicating...hm....

By the end of this post, I'm feelin' a little like this

Dear E-Lit,

We need to talk. You see, sometimes I haven't a clue what you do and most times I wonder why you even do whatever it is that you do. I thought we could enjoy a two-way conversation but you have been vague all the while. In our most recent meeting I have tried to make sense of the topsy-turvy roller coaster you have strapped me on with "Permutation Poems" but instead, here I am, at wit's end and fists in the air. At first, I admit, I was annoyed with having to read each iteration and wanted to rest my tired, weary eyes but then an idea came to mind: what if this poem was a means of bridging me and you together, person to computer? How romantic and how poetic, I thought--I still think, truthfully, sometimes. You were exploring the boundaries of your artistry and reaching out to finally communicate with me in the only way you knew how. Immersing myself in your poetry was almost sad in that your creations are limited by plug n' chug algorithms, but also quite beautiful in that each rearranged sentence is your attempt at organic poetry. I confess being nearly swept away at how brilliant it seemed until I read, "RE CALLING ALL ACTIVE AGENTS." A mental shudder and a few steps back make me suddenly realize the utter randomness of your words and, even more significantly, the senselessness. I felt like you were calling to action a sleeper agent from among the audience to orchestrate some unexpected and possibly heinous scheme. Unbelievably, in our every encounter you present the conversation piece and I simply react and ponder the if's and the why's and the what's. Is there [[meaning]] to the things you create? Am I, the audience, meant to mull over everything? In what other ways can we interact more wholly?

I have always been tangentially aware of such experimental Twitters, but I hadn't gotten to a point where I thought of them as literature. Now it is exciting to view them as legitimate works by real scholars! The one that generated every word in the English language over the course of several years was particularly satisfying to see. I wonder if the creator (or anyone else who discovered it) ever just watched it crawl its way through the C's, then the D's, then maybe they left it for awhile and came back and took in the I's. Imagine the excitement they felt when it got towards the end of the Z's, seven years of patience about to come to fruition. Fascinating stuff, I would love to make some sort of social media account with a nifty concept behind it.

Today, at my monotonous clerical job, I began to inevitably pore over the disappointments of this last week and was quite pleased when I only turned up a handful. However, the ones I could think of all had something in common: they revolved around some sort of [[canceled]] plan. Of course, everyone is busy and has loads of legitimate reasons for skipping out on a coffee and/or movie and/or late lunch and/or early dinner and/or donut and/or "well this has been awful, wanna call it quits before we really hate each other?" In my particular case, I got bailed on in my attempts to schedule friendly week one meetups, which is hardly a surprise. I too found myself making several 11th hour cancellations as my latest Netflix obsession picked up steam. As the autoplay counted down to the Xth episode of the night, I suddenly paused and remembered I had work the next day. After a moment of distress I looked up and realized I had missed the pause button anyway. Oh well, what would one more episode hurt?

As my shift began to wind down and as my mood picked up with the realization of how manageable and unremarkable my shortcomings of the last week were, I had an idea for a project. What if I took these cancellation texts and made some kind of interactive experience with them?

"Solid idea, just needs to be fleshed out more," says my friend over dinner after rescheduling from last week.

I nod, check my Twitter, then go back to fretting about the work I haven't done this quarter.
In the game, as if from nowhere, I've gone from baking cookies in the questionable underbelly of my house to managing a growing cookie empire where everyone and their grandma's grandma is working for me. In ten minutes' time I've got museums being erected in honor of my cookies, kings and queens from faraway lands reveling in the heavenly gooeyness of my treats, and really, a capitalist creation to systematically infiltrate lives in both the public and private spheres of everyday people. Funnily enough, I've actually downloaded games form the Apple App Store that parallels the gameplay of Cookie Clicker but with a different premise; while easy to play since the game mechanics simply require tapping/clicking and waiting, the underlying commentary the game produces is just a dash jarring. What I wonder is why exactly this game is a piece of required reading for the class.

There is no statement more melancholic: "Art is a form of property."

To be sure, the concept and workings of our current economy are not lost on me: in short, we live too comfortably in a dandy consumerist world wherein the capitalist system controlled by the few closely assumes the role of Big Brother to the many.

Back to the point, having always felt that art is created at the intersection of some artist's self-expression and creative ingenuity that is free of any possible bounds another person can place upon it, there is a sad sort of dissonance in it being referred to as one would a cheap Target product--a pack of bananas, a box of band-aids, a deck of cards, or what have you. While our reality makes it impossible for me to argue against the notion of art being a form of property, I want to rebel against it being valued solely as such. Troemel's essay thankfully elaborates--almost a little too much and for too long--on the effect social media has on the trajectory of art and their artists, which brings to mind the hollow attitude in which society now appreciates art. The heated discourse I have observed but never partook in online from between freelance digital artists and "lovers" of their art--though "calculating, insensitive cheapos" would probably be a more apt description--is telling of the growing devaluation of art as a work of laborious creation and increasing sentiment for it as a factory commodity. Although difficult, there is definite need to rewire the way in which we view and value' creative pursuits and creative results.

ENG 116B: Introduction to Electronic Literature

What is not electronic literature today? [[see also: nothing?]] Rather than introduce electronic literature or “e-lit” as a [[distinct]] literary [[category]], this course wonders if it’s still possible to consider literature [[beyond]] the electronic circuits that characterize the networked present. The [[creation]] and study of literature today is facilitated by a range of [[digital]] formats and networked [[consoles]], each of which introduce [[new]] [[practices]] of production, circulation, [[reception]], and [[reading]]. Alongside these [[transformations]], we’ll explore a range of new literary genres inhabiting, for example, computer scripts, image [[macros]], flash movies, social media, [[hypertext]] [[bandcamp]] releases, [[interactive]] applications, and print on demand books. Thinking through the present, this introduction examines the history and future of literature through the everyday experience of computers and electronic devices. From the history of digital poetics to recent internet publications, we’ll track the [[development]] of [[literature]] [[under the influence]] of computation up to works published in the present, as they emerge throughout the quarter. In lockstep, the course considers the category of “electronic literature” as a way to think about historical works remediated to the internet, in a wide range of [[(post-)]]digital formats. The course requires short weekly responses in an open format, as well as a mid-term and final assignment, which may be critical or [[creative]] in form, [[developed]] in conversation with the instructor. No previous experience in [[programming]], [[poetry]], or literature is [[required]].

Is there meaning to the things you create? Am I, the audience, meant to mull over everything? In what other ways can we interact more wholly?

Sincerely,
