Given the accessibility of the internet in present time, it’s become quite easy to share one’s opinion and have a lot of people acknowledge it. And even more so when it comes to ignorant remarks—everyone’s always had them but now there’s a way to reach even more people with it. For my final project, I had two ideas: I was considering taking publicly-noted statements that have in one way or another caused some form of impact on a social media and then show the many reactions. In some cases, this has been simply memes while in others there have been whole public statements made as a result, given that sometimes it’s not enough to just mock something with a poor image. This incorporation of responses will allow for a true, full picture of where the issue lies and whether the statement is accepted or not. In any case, I’m still not certain about how I’ll achieve this project. I was considering using a book (Lulu) as my format simply because I like the idea of it being printed out, but I’m also considering a social media platform that allows for threads (such as Twitter). Then, my second idea was something similar. I was just going to take states that Donald Trump has said and around each statement (usually a tweet) make a collage of all the sources that prove that he’s a dirty liar. And because he’s such a pathological liar, I know for sure there’s endless ways to go about this and a lot of information I could gather. The collage would, much like the other option, be taken from articles, social medias, memes, and other sources. The reason I was considering this one was because: 1) he’s always lying 2) it’s frustrating that Twitter won’t remove him and no amount of proving him wrong makes him shut up 3) it’s highly interesting to see how the president of the United States can blatantly lie when one quick google search can prove that it is just that—a lie 4) It’s highly intriguing to see how the world reacts to such an uncommon occurrence, particularly within the internet with the resources/technology provided and 4) I hate him. In any case, I’d probably do it in book format for sure and call it something like “Big Fat Liar: Presidential Edition”. Or maybe something else. My attached image is just a quick screenshot of evidence that he lies i just screenshot up to the first three and there's hundreds more but I think this brings the point home already. It took a few seconds to find... Ugh, he's so embarrassing.

This past Thursday (October 26th, 2017) we did not have an in-class meeting, but instead chatted online about works we (my classmates and I) believe should be added to the syllabus. These include creative as well as critical works, which I think is important. I think this balance is important because while critical works set the foundation for understanding countless facets of electronic literature, creative works apply these concepts and allow us to view them in action. In the chat, we focused on creative works, such as videos and games. I had never seen these videos prior to engaging with my classmates, and it made interpreting these creative works much more exciting. This is because I was able to build my ideas or opinions off of my classmates' and vice versa. In other words, interpreting different works (such as creative works) becomes more insightful when your peers are also contributing their ideas on the matter. Turning reading and analyzing into a social activity is fascinating, and something that I had not deeply considered before taking this class. Overall, I am very satisfied with how Thursday's meeting went, and I would be happy to do the same activity or a similar activity in an upcoming class (whether that be in a real class meeting or on an online chat again).

Artist Richard Prince has been making headlines again recently when his 2014 Instagram-sourced “New Portraits” resurfaced last month at Frieze Art Fair New York. Prince scours Instagram for public photos (often sexualized female portraits), adds his own comment, and then enlarges the image and prints it on canvas.

Prince has long been famous for appropriating images, putting his name on them, and selling them for ridiculously high price tags. But he has just met his match with Selena Mooney, founder of the SuicideGirls website. Mooney is selling the original Instagram photos appropriated by Prince for a mere $90 as opposed to his $90,000 charge.

Lynne Cooke’s review of Prince’s 1992 show seems to summarize current reactions to his recent series “New Portraits” presented by the Gagosian Gallery. Cooke theorizes that, like any established brand name, much of his success rests on his earlier reputation. She notes:

Much of the commentary on Prince’s work initially concentrated on its relationship to issues of appropriation, simulation, and to postmodernist attacks on the so-called modernist myths of originality, authorship, and authenticity.

Prince’s artistic practice has always been challenged by critics, though likewise his very forthright practice and process challenges viewers, gallerists, art patrons, and the public at large to consider and debate the very value of art and copyright, now questioning what it means to own, create, and appropriate public art in this digital age.

In a 1988 interview with Prince, Marvin Halferman asked about Warhol’s influence upon his photographic works, to which Prince responded, “I wanted to use photography because it has another…history. Painting, silk screen, drawing, they suggest something else. But photography suggested belief. It suggests fact. I thought that because I was choosing subject matter that was in fact, fiction, it might be better to use a factual medium to level that fiction, to occupy an area of ‘official fiction.’”

It seems that Prince’s blending of fact and fiction via photography has now expanded into the much murkier waters of social media, where an exponentially growing public archive is available to him as his medium.

Whether praised for his continued relevance in the conversation surrounding ownership and the digital archive or whether condemned for his lack of originality and accused of outright stealing, Prince continues to sell his work and name while sparking important and relevant conversations.

Cooke sums it up best back in ‘92 saying, “Whether it is encountered in actuality or in reproduction matters little, for Prince’s works function best when they act as reminders of themselves, as traces of what has already been seen, revealed, or known.” Instagram currently has 300 million active users who are likely intricately and personally embedded in this network of friends, family, celebrity, and strangers alike.

By tapping into this network and appropriating these images, Prince continues the legacy Cooke alludes to—his work is at once intimate, known, familiar, irritating, and (at least monetarily) successful.

Social media sites work so that the user can very easily change the narrative that they give to people in relation to their life. In this way, one's life can be quite boring, but what is perceived by the other users can be incredibly exciting and complex. In this very same way, art has a way of modifying pictures to make them interesting and amazing. Snap Art is when people take pictures and then use the editing tools on Snapchat in order to edit the picture into something quite intriguing.
It is quite strange how we develop different styles of reading. You can read fast, slow, word by word, or all at once. You can read and analyze, or just let the words flow right out of your brain. From young on we learn our own specific style of reading. True, it may change as we grow up and dive into more subjects and different forms of writing, but our general style is somehow embedded in us...or at least this was the recent thought that came to me while reading, "The Library of Babel." From the beginning of the story, I read it with the intent of analyzing the words and making connections to other topics. This intent was amplified when I read, "The universe (which others call the Library)..." Of course! The universe is represented by the Library, and therefore the hexagonal galleries must be different dimensions, or planets, or places in the universe, and so, the different books that are uniquely their own and all made up of the same elements must be human beings, and that must mean the Man of the Book must be God, or Jesus...and I realized I was completely wrong and read what I wanted to see or hear (I mean it's both right?). I realized just how accustomed I am to reading literature in books, and how basic my mind really is. I didn't think to believe that the Library could be a real place, that a place could have all the books and could tell your past, present, and future...or maybe I didn't want to. It's unnerving to think all the information of the universe could be in some place where, if anyone found it, they'd have all the knowledge equivalent of God. But in reality, the Internet is becoming the Library. With so much information from all around the world, who knows what it'll know in the future. Who knows what we'll know in the future. Maybe we'll become like the librarians-in continuous search for answers and meaning...or maybe we'll wither away before that happens, if we're only lucky.

After reading through N. Katherine Hayles’ essay “Electronic Literature: What is it?,” I found her discussion on video games and their role in interactive fiction to be somewhat lacking in regards to their creative potential for a narrative. If the essay was older, I would feel more lenient in this aspect, but since it was published in 2007, there would be a wide variety of games out there that played with the narrative form in more ways than what Hayles details. For example, she never mentions visual novels, which are a genre of video games that very much function similarly to more traditional literary forms. In addition, while she mentions “visual displays, graphics, animations, and clever modifications of traditional literary devices” in her essay for what video games add to literature, she never addresses how video games, and interactive fiction by extension, allow for the player to change the narrative for themselves and craft an ending based on their own choices throughout the story and gameplay presented (Hayles). Games can allow for multiple endings and thus for people to shape the narrative on their own. In this way, games have the potential to creatively play with their narrative and not just follow a specific streamlined plot like one would have to in other creative mediums, like in a movie, TV show, or novel. Because of this omission, I feel that Hayles does a disservice in representing how, through video games, electronic literature can further break the conventions of how typical narrative operates and bring even more options to the literary landscape as a whole.

As a last thought, I will suggest some video games here that involve choices and/or multiple endings like I have discussed here! My suggestions would be Undertale, Silent Hill & Silent Hill 2, Dragon Age: Origins, The Stanley Parable, the Zero Escape Series, NieR & NieR Automata, Until Dawn, etc. I would list more, but there's way too many. Also, since I briefly mentioned them, my recommended visual novel series would be the Zero Escape, Danganronpa, and Ace Attorney series. Anyway, thanks for reading!

The piece titled "Darkness (chapter 1)" is an electronic form of literature in which Yedda Morrison re-animates the text of Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness". Yedda highlights the words that describe images of nigh time wilderness. This is the story of which the background takes center stage as opposed to the man in the wilderness, we are left with a story of the wilderness itself. The author does a good job of highlighting the key phrases in which make up the dark forrest. The word DARKNESS is appropriately the only word kept from the original title. This is something that I have never come across before and it certainly goes outside of the realm of normal literature. In a sense Yedda has taken the work of one author and cut out everything around the storyline except for the setting, the setting in which is not the focal point of the storyline. One of the words which took me awhile to comprehend as to why it was chosen was the word GLITTER. It seems as this word does not go hand and hand with the rest of the words and phrases highlighted, however it seems even in the cold and dark night, we are still able to see specs of light, whether that be the moonlight shine upon the river or the fire flies amongst the night.

Twitter has decided to change the word limit from 140 to 280 & everyone's freaking out. Which, of course, I don't entirely understand. I mean,

there's obvious criticism that those who are horrible & use the platform negatively will have more power, but ultimately it's not that true?

Because really, when considering matters, users can always just go & post two tweets in a thread & get a similar effect? So, I don't really

understand why everyone's freaking out. Another complaint is that it'll make the website harder to navigate, but not really. Has everyone on

twitter become so lazy that the idea of reading a tweet that's the size of two tweets genuinely makes people go on embarrassing rage rants?

There are plenty of positive aspects to having this change, such as the space for more creativity & the fact that people will no longer have

to sacrifice grammar for the sake of fitting everything in a single tweet anymore, which I love. After going through some conceptual twitter

accounts & seeing how differently people choose to use twitter, I’m quite excited to see what will happen once everyone does have access to

this new feature. I have a friend that swore he will start tweeting the Bee Movie script in 280 word tweets (someone did before in 2014 but

they were by lines rather than by the 140-word limit ). I told him that he was an idiot, but I will probably still follow the account if

he ends up doing it. Although, I truly wish people would just ban that awful movie already, please. But anyways, as for those people who

are raging, I do understand that sometimes change can be a bit unsettling, especially because humans like familiarity & dislike pushing the

boundaries unless necessary. But the fact that idiots are choosing to focus so strongly on this when there are much more important issues to

rage about, even within the platform itself, is quite bizarre. But then again, people always choose to focus on the things that don’t matter

even though they shouldn’t. But hey, if they didn't care before then it's no wonder they still don't care. They're too busy raging at Jack.

The new features will be hard to get used to for some but everyone will still be there, still tweeting on the daily, at the end of the day.

Fridaysreign:

"If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor." - Desmond Tutu

Quite ironically, the word neutrality brings up a lot of inner turmoil within me, no matter how intensely or dejectedly I may be thinking about whatever it is I'm focusing on when I encounter the word. One of my favorite quotes of all time, shared above, utilizes the word while making social commentary about life. And given that it's one of the quotes I hold quite close to me, I've come to attach quite a bit of meaning to the word.

Neutrality implies impartiality, a lack of decisive opinions on something, and a lack of support for any sides of an argument. At first glance, this may seem like quite a peaceful concept, given that not partaking in something means that there's no responsibility regardless of whether it's a good thing or a bad thing. However, the implications for such a state such as neutrality mean a lot more when applying them to life. People struggle to remain neutral on matters. No matter what it may be, from pockets on women's clothing to racism in the workforce, there's always strong opinions for the multitudes of opinions that stem from such issues. This is because neutrality is idealistically detached from reality.

It is meant to be seen as a safe concept given that it implies no ties to anything, yet its very existence is based on the idea of privilege. To be neutral on an issue one has to be able to be both unaffected by it and uninvolved, something that usually becomes especially tedious when focusing on social issues. People who are affected do not have the privilege of staying uninvolved or not care. That was the case with Adrian Piper, who had to develop calling cards in order to get her opinion across on issues that affected her. And of course, the fact that they affected her were ultimately out of her control, given that she could not just ignore the injustices she faced as both half-black and a woman.

The problem wasn't that she cared too much, it was that she couldn't not care. Many of the issues brought forth were direct attacks on her and inherently ignorant in nature, which made it nearly impossible for her to deem them socially acceptable. But of course, many white or male individuals, or both, were clearly unaffected and unconcerned. This wasn't because they had thicker skin... it was because they had the privilege of not being directly affected by it. After all, the ignorant statements Piper overheard or directly received about black individuals and women didn't concern them and didn't harm them in any way.

Because of all of this, I've grown to dislike neutrality, at least when referring to people's mentalities and its many variations in relation to life. Perhaps it's a bit excessive to dislike a word based on association, but the nature of the word is dismissive and unnecessary, much like those who choose to remain neutral on issues just because they can. It's quite tragic that there are people who can be in power and somehow believe that they can remain neutral on social issues to save face, or because they simply don't care. Because they don't have to care, that's a choice they have.

-------
------
-----
----

Dear President,
If you don't care, then you don't care. And that's it. If I don't care,
I'm risking my very life and the freedoms granted to me, and most I hold
dear, by those who bravely and tirelessly fought for them long before me.
Who fought tooth and nail. Through sweat and tears. With their very lives.
I regret any discomfort this fact may cause you, just as I am sure you
regret the discomfort your neutrality and ignorance is causing me.
P.S. There are no good nazis.

Because they don't have to care, that's a choice they have.

rage about, even within the platform itself, is quite bizarre.

Twitter has decided to change the word limit from 140 to 280 & everyone's freaking out. Which, of course, I don't entirely understand. I mean,

there's obvious criticism that those who are ignorant & use the platform negatively will have more power, but ultimately it's not that true?

Because really, when considering matters, people can always just go & post two tweets in a thread & get a similar effect? So, I don't really

understand why everyone's freaking out. Another complaint is that it'll make the website harder to navigate, but not really. Has everyone on

twitter become so lazy that the idea of reading a tweet that's the size of two tweets genuinely makes people go on embarrassing rage rants?

There are plenty of positive aspects to having this change, such as the space for more creativity & the fact that people will no longer have

to sacrifice grammar for the sake of fitting everything in a single tweet anymore, which I love. After going through some conceptual twitter
An example of distinctness can be seen within Jonathan Basile's internet creation [The Library of Babel], which was inspired by Jorge Luis Borges' short story The Library Of Babel (1941). Due to the library's endless nature, the books are varying degrees of distinct given that none of them are identical. Another example of something being distinct is the informality in which I'm speaking within this second paragraph given that I quite genuinely had something to say, but that's as gone as my energy. I ran out of things to say. On the first part, I still had like forty or so words to go until I reached the word limit. If I could insert pictures I would insert one of my pets. Goodnight, world.
ENG 116B: Introduction to Electronic Literature

What is not electronic literature today? Rather than introduce electronic literature or “e-lit” as a distinct literary category, this course wonders if it’s still possible to consider literature beyond the electronic circuits that characterize the networked present. The creation and study of literature today is facilitated by a range of digital formats and networked consoles, each of which introduce new practices of production, circulation, reception, and reading. Alongside these transformations, we’ll explore a range of new literary genres inhabiting, for example, computer scripts, image macros, flash movies, social media, bandcamp releases, interactive applications, and print on demand books. Thinking through the present, this introduction examines the history and future of literature through the everyday experience of computers and electronic devices. From the history of digital poetics to recent internet publications, we’ll track the development of literature under the influence of computation up to works published in the present, as they emerge throughout the quarter. In lockstep, the course considers the category of “electronic literature” as a way to think about historical works remediated to the internet, in a wide range of (post-)digital formats. The course requires short weekly responses in an open format, as well as a mid-term and final assignment, which may be critical or creative in form, developed in conversation with the instructor. No previous experience in programming, poetry, or literature is required.
