<div>My finals project, although still developing in some sense, focuses on the post-digital concept of online reviews. Before the internet, reviews were much less accessible to the general public, and were less of a factor when deciding to make a purchase. Now, online reviews are a huge factor into whether or not one decides to purchase a particular product. In a simple text based format, I will take online reviews of a particular object and replace that particular object with “the internet.” To clarify, I would take a preexisting review, on say, blenders, and rewrite the review in such a way that it might refer to a user's experience using the internet. I aim to keep the basic structure of the original review in tact, as well as gather a multitude of interesting reviews and perspectives for the topic I end up choosing. I also hope to show through the complexity or at times, simplicity of reviews, that writing an online review might be considered an art on its own, and perhaps it may even be considered “electronic literature.” Somewhat similar to a “poor image” in appeal, poor reviews, some of which are badly written, hilariously misguiding, or both, are perhaps the most memorable and can, ironically, lead to even more sales of a particular product. Meanwhile, a massive amount of flowing reviews with no negatives may lead to suspicion, as companies have been known to pay individuals or hire actors and even bots to give their praise. Ultimately, I hope to show that the online review is a simple and often overlooked concept, yet its developmental process is complex and its impact on the consumer profound.<br />

<div>I found the practices involved in the production and experience of electronic literature very interesting. While creating literary works has always been thought of as something within the domain of writers, it is apparent that different skill sets can be helpful in creating more complete works of electronic literature. For instance, digital poetry “fuses crafted language with new media technology and techniques” (Funkhouser, 2006). According to an article from MIT, programmers have used software to create their own poems, harnessing computers’ ability to iterate more easily than humans (Repantis, 2014). Besides writers, programmers and designers may be involved in creating electronic literature, making it not just the endeavor of one profession but of multiple.<br />
<br />
The practices we use to interact with electronic literature are also influenced by the practices we use when consuming print literature. Electronic literature only arrived after “five hundred years” of print literature, so our expectations of aspects like “letter forms” and “print conventions” have been indubitably influenced by print literature. (Hayles, 2007). I find Hayles’ comment to be very true for myself too – even when browsing electronic works, I found myself wanting to read left to right and up to down, simply scrolling through the work.<br />
<br />
I have always conceived the practice of producing literary works as an art, not something rooted in science or technology. However, reading about electronic literature and experiencing works of interactive fiction such as The Jew’s Daughter have allowed me to realise that the practice of literary production can be both (Morrissey, 2000). As aptly put by Funkhouser, programmers can “assemble language” according to commands, indicating an intractable scientific precision. However, literature is hard to fully divorce from emotion and sentiment, and so writers are always needed to choose the right words (Funkhouser, 2006). What ultimately emerges is a practice that is grounded in both art and science, reshaping the practices readers adopt when interacting with literature.<br />

There are two sides to fan fiction in my view; amazing extensions to the world of fantasy or, on the other side, smut. I'm curious to see where the class will go with this topic. Rather than introduce electronic literature or “e-lit” as a distinct literary category, ELIT WIKI wonders if it’s still possible to consider literature beyond the electronic circuits that characterize the networked present. The creation and study of literature today is facilitated by a range of digital formats and networked consoles, each of which introduce new practices of production, circulation, reception, and reading. Alongside these transformations, this wiki explores a range of new literary genres inhabiting, for example, computer scripts, image macros, flash movies, social media, hypertext bandcamp releases, interactive applications, and print on demand books. It also discusses the central critical issues raised by electronic literature, pointing out that there is significant overlap with the print tradition. At the same time, the essay argues that the practices, texts, procedures, and processual nature of electronic literature require new critical models and new ways of playing and interpreting the works. E-Lit WIki is not a systematic attempt to survey and summarize the fast-changing field of electronic literature, artists, designers, writers, critics—instead, it imagines itself a playful engagement with the forms and platforms of the present. <div>The concept of video game criticism is highly interesting to me. When reading &quot;Unit operations&quot; of which of course I did not read in its entirety due to its length, I was stunned at the level of detail and analysis put forth into presenting the argument that video games may be analyzed in a contemporary fashion as with works of literature and other forms of art. I've always found video-games, even the most shitty and unplayable games, to be more interesting as an art form that some of the greatest classical pieces such as the Mona Lisa. I first got into more abstract games by playing what are known as &quot;indie-games.&quot; These games are typically lesser known and published by very small groups or independent developers. There are some unique ideas presented through video game format that are perhaps most effectively presented due to the interactive nature between the player and the game. I've also found that even more abstract concept stick with me because playing videos games in more of an &quot;experience&quot; then a &quot;lesson.&quot; My thoughts are currently that video games may be classified as electronic literature, especially with regard to visual novels, and even point and click adventures.</div>

<div>What is not electronic literature today? Rather than introduce electronic literature or “e-lit” as a distinct literary category, ELIT WIKI wonders if it’s still possible to consider literature beyond the electronic circuits that characterize the networked present. The creation and study of literature today is facilitated by a range of digital formats and networked consoles, each of which introduce new practices of production, circulation, reception, and reading. Alongside these transformations, this wiki explores a range of new literary genres inhabiting, for example, computer scripts, image macros, flash movies, social media, hypertext bandcamp releases, interactive applications, and print on demand books. Thinking through the present, ELIT WIKI examines the history and future of literature through the everyday experience of computers and electronic devices. From the history of digital poetics to recent internet publications, we track the development of literature under the influence of computation up to works published in the present, as they emerge online. In lockstep, this wiki considers the category of “electronic literature” as a way to think about historical works remediated to the internet, in a wide range of (post-)digital formats. The wiki features short pages in an open format, which may be critical or creative in form, developed in conversation with the editors. No previous experience in programming, poetry, or literature is required to read these pages.<br />
<br />

<br />
This wiki surveys the development and current state of electronic literature, from the popularity of hypertext fiction in the 1980's to the present, focusing on a range of emergent genres. All three pieces impart, in a different overall attempt to define what exactly conceptual art is. After reading all three pieces, I'm still not sure. The biggest question for me is whether or not all art is of equal value in this world. Can a crumpled up piece of trash set upon a pedestal be compared to the Mona Lisa? I suppose what Lewitt would say is, yes, in the eyes of some. I wonder then, is it even possible to objectively categorize that which originates from the realms of subjectivity? Taking this idea a step further; are all human lives of equal worth? Perhaps when applied contextually to a uniform idea, such as in &quot;God's eyes&quot; all lives are equal. <div>ENG 116B: Introduction to Electronic Literature<br />
<br />
What is not electronic literature today? Rather than introduce electronic literature or “e-lit” as a distinct literary category, this course wonders if it’s still possible to consider literature beyond the electronic circuits that characterize the networked present. The creation and study of literature today is facilitated by a range of digital formats and networked consoles, each of which introduce new practices of production, circulation, reception, and reading. Alongside these transformations, we’ll explore a range of new literary genres inhabiting, for example, computer scripts, image macros, flash movies, social media, bandcamp releases, interactive applications, and print on demand books. Thinking through the present, this introduction examines the history and future of literature through the everyday experience of computers and electronic devices. From the history of digital poetics to recent internet publications, we’ll track the development of literature under the influence of computation up to works published in the present, as they emerge throughout the quarter. In lockstep, the course considers the category of “electronic literature” as a way to think about historical works remediated to the internet, in a wide range of (post-)digital formats. The course requires short weekly responses in an open format, as well as a mid-term and final assignment, which may be critical or creative in form, developed in conversation with the instructor. No previous experience in programming, poetry, or literature is required.</div>
