Sitting in the Study, I think about what interests me; music, books, pictures, nature, people, beauty, language, food, shopping, movies, and so forth. So the trick is to somehow combine the maximum number of these interests while still being a relatively easy and cool project for Elit. My current idea is to create a fake person through a social media profile (maybe twitter since I do not have one) formed by eavesdropping and/or taking pictures and information from other public profiles, or idealized things today, to illustrate how easily information can be obtained and abused through the internet as well as to demonstrate the deceptive cloak the Internet can create. Another idea would be to create a book of lies filled with statements, pictures, or mentions of the word 'lie' from different platforms compiled into one PDF. Another idea could be a "How to start a conversation" filled with what peoples' opening lines or moves are to start a conversation online or in real life...in which case I could incorporate how people use memes, gifs, and cheesy jokes and all. (May ask people specifically or just go off of what people have used on me and what can be found on the Internet). So I suppose I have multiple ideas, none of which I'm sure would be good per se or even as easy as I hope. Taken from the Alt Syllabus article, "Being an English Major as Told By the Office."]] I'm so confused. I read the critical piece regarding aesthetics of materiality in electronic literature, and (I think) it helped me view Instagram, specifically, as a literary medium. Unfortunately, I don't see how certain pages such as @Richardwithhairdoingthings would be considered electronic literature. I do see it as art though, since the person behind the Instagram handle is telling a story in his/her own unique way; they are placing certain pictures, images, and captions in a sort of aesthetically pleasing way. (Oh) Is that considered electronic literature? It is indeed like the twitter concept pages we created, the memes that we looked at, the games that we played, the interactive stories that we moved through, and the GIFs that we discussed. If these are all included in the electronic literature genre, I absolutely love it. (I'm rambling a bit cause I'm still confused, but writing down exactly what comes to my mind is actually helping). Regardless of what I think/know, I admire those who are able be get creative with their social media platforms. Instagram users post one picture with a moving caption, and their grid tells an amazing story. The user knows how to arrange their grid in a cohesive manner, so that it is aesthetically pleasing to whoever randomly lands upon it. The captions are usually super clever too - puns, poems, quotes, hashtags, etc.. There really is no limit to what medium you can use when it comes to telling a story.

THE TWITTER NARRATIVE

Seriality and Storytelling in Social Media poses an intriguing point about the importance of the relationship between the creation of a narrative and the eventual meaning of the narrative. From the first letter typed on the page to the final compilation of thoughts in the entire plot, every step is important to the eventual context of the narrative. Social media narratives, specifically, reinforce contextual significance because a short phrase has little meaning without prior platform context or social context. The entire meaning of the narrative can be changed through the simplest shift of context.

The essence of a twitter narrative is centered around the disjointed yet fluid nature of the content, as presented in a series of punctuated phrases that each elicit a different emotion or aim to suggest a specific idea. Jennifer Egan’s artful piece about “The Beauties” begins in the same vague manner that its narrative holds as a key characteristic in the storyline. A multi-level parallelism. The sequential nature of this piece both reflects and creates, actively shifting the meanings of past entries through the addition of new content that progresses the narrative as well as shapes what has already been established as part of the narrative. Egan’s narrative features a series of individual tweets that could each be standalone, retaining an individual meaning, but altogether have a contextual meaning.

Dear David’s documentation of the ghost haunting his apartment is similar to Egan’s narrative in that it is a series of rather disjointed thoughts that all come together to celebrate a greater contextual meaning. The disparity, though, lies in the fact that each of David’s new tweets is posted as a reply to the previous thought. This gives the narrative an additional dimension of its sequential aspect, and deepens the notion that these pieces were not intended to represent their standalone meanings, but rather serve to emphasize the overall meaning and progress the narrative. This is a much more structured attempt at creating a narrative from a series of individual thoughts, as shown through the sequential method of presentation.

The 140-character novel trend is a rather frustrating one. A novel is called a novel because it has the characteristic of being long-winded and detail-filled, and these tweet novels represent no such identity. While I appreciate the creativity behind the careful and simultaneous allocation of letters and meaning, I do not like the cliffhangers whose characters have no name or description, and whose details consist of a single adjective. Never will a single tweet be the platform upon which a great novel will be built. An idea, though, is a viable option.

In ‘13 Beautiful Pieces of Twitter Fiction Remind Us How Powerful Reading Can Be’ we see just how useful social media can be in reinventing historical works of fiction to provide updated context and meaning. Chaucer as a participant in the twittersphere is just as impressive as it is unfathomable. The sheer difficulty of the Canterbury Tales is enough to make us question the decision to transfer his works onto a platform so colloquial. Twitter reworkings of original texts also provide the opportunity to further develop and explore the characters of these texts by creating a contextually based inner monologue diary that deepens the plot and creates unheard of intricacies between the storyline and the characters’ identities.
Instead, it seems as though code is intentionally obscured. In his online-book Poetic Computation: Reader Taeyoon Choi brings code out of the shadows and discusses it as a form of poetry and aesthetic––an idea with which I myself now identify. I still don't really know what code is and will probably never be able to read it :( , but after reading and viewing some of Choi's work, I am able to see code as both a visual art and as a type of poetry, one that possesses certain "literary" aspects characteristic of "E-Lit." In other words, code is extremely dynamic.
----
Choi discusses the poetics of code, whereby there is something inherently poetic about code itself, as well as the poetic effect of code, which he defines as an aesthetic experience realized through code. I looked at some of Choi's art, his "code poems" to be specific, and from these works I observed that code has the unique ability to repeat itself just like words in a poem do. One might even say that his code poems contain rhyme schemes, alliterations, enjambments, stanzas, couplets, etc. Here, the equation is simple: code = poetry.

I'm interested in how the internet has changed the way that artists, writers and musicians interact with their audience and how social media platforms, like bandcamp have created a new form of personal narrative through accessibility and transparency. Technology has made it possible for art to be instantaneously shared, accessed and responded to (commented on) by consumers. Today, many artists would rather release a smaller output of music more frequently, for example an EP every few months rather than a full length album every year. Songs are also typically shorter. I think this format improves the narrative experience as it naturally interactive as well as encourages artists to take their time. Transparency is an equally important element to this genre, which embraces vulnerability or “baring one’s soul” to the world. I think this is currently pushing literature/ music to be involved, personal and original than it ever has been—look up Frankie Cosmos. Lastly, I think that process of discovery is also unique to this form. As Hayles refers to it, sifting through the “drivel”, I believe that doing this can sometimes be very gratifying when you discover a writer or band who moves/ inspires you.

I read the "Digital Artist Yung Jake Scores With Emoji Portraits" critical work, and thought it would be fun to try to make one and put it on here...but for some reason the wiki does not allow pictures, or I just don't know how to get it on here. In which case I probably need more help with electronic stuff than I thought. So instead I went to my Snapchat and wrote down the first snap of people's snapstories. Enjoy ;D

This past lecture (Thursday, October 19th) we spent some time at the end of class playing online games. I really enjoyed playing the different games, but playing various games helped me realize what elements I prefer a game to have. These include: fun music, colorful visuals, and plenty of options to choose from. Fun music is important because it keeps the game entertaining, rather than making it feel boring or monotonous. Colorful visuals are equally important because they add intrigue and appeal to the game, which attracts people like myself. Lastly, I think it is important for a game to have various options to choose from because that way it can cater to all audiences. In other words, having options for people with different interests, as opposed to only a few options that are rather narrow-minded, enables all audiences to feel included and connected to the game. Therefore, when games had all of those three significant elements, I enjoyed the game a lot more (than when they lacked one or more of those qualities). For example, I was initially attracted to the Kesha game because I heard this game's music from the laptops of my classmates. Upon playing this game, I liked the layout as well as the music, but I felt that the content (the different questions and selections) was a bit lacking and did not cater to many audiences. For this reason, I found the Kesha game fun, but perhaps not one of my absolute favorites.

A video game console is an electronic, digital or computer device that outputs a video signal or visual image to display a video game that one or more people can play. After being exposed to and enthralled by Alejandro Miguel Justino Crawford's Diana Hamilton's Dreams, I was reminded of a 2017 South African video game, n Verlore Verstand, that is accessible on several different consoles such as Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC. Developed by Skobbejak Games, n Verlore Verstand is Afrikaans for "a lost mind," and this sense of unhinged madness is the very essence of the game. As Diana Hamilton's Dreams attempts to unlock the subconscious and 'approach the truth of dreams...through the navigation and connection and layering of sounds and stories that, half-recognized, slip away when we try to tie them down...' (Kill Screen), n Verlore Verstand similarly seeks to journey through an uncanny, subterranean consciousness, one that falls outside of our immediate focal awareness. While gameplay varies across the different levels/worlds, from walking through barren and desolate fields to navigating murky and dungeon-like labyrinthine corridors, the fundamental theme is this realm of the unknown. Here, the player must navigate through networks of broken and distant memories in order to unlock the truth.
----
Diana Hamilton's Dreams is not just a collection of poems in the form of a game but is itself a poem as n Verlore Verstand functions as its own set of beautiful images and sounds. Both games have a type of 'literary aspect' and essentially fracture all preexisting knowledge of what constitutes 'literature' in general. Video games such as these access something about us that words on a page cannot do, perhaps due to their overload of sensory information, cognitively demanding environments, and other reasons I am still trying to figure out...

E-Lit is to literature as a synthesizer is to music. What is a synthesizer, you ask? A synthesizer is an electronic musical instrument that generates electric signals that are converted to sound through amplifiers, speakers, headphones, etc.. E-Lit is like a synthesizer in that it converts digital material into literature through hypertext, chatterbots, interactive fiction, twitterature, emails, SMS, blogs, etc. Both E-Lit and synthesizers convert digital/electronic forms into high art––conceptual art, even. What’s more, for both synthesizers and E-Lit, the creator is required to traverse through the literature/music in a digital setting, making the very use of the medium part of the artful exchange.

One might question the analogy I established above and wonder why I did not say “A computer is to E-Lit as a synthesizer is to music.” This would seem logical, as you have each electronic device producing the forms of high art, however, I do not support the typical designation of E-lit as an sub-genre of literature. Instead, I have come to view E-Lit as the vehicle or medium in which virtual forms are transformed into literature. Deeming E-Lit as a “sub-genre” of literature seems to undermine E-Lit’s own authority and high quality. By considering E-Lit as the very vehicle in which one makes literature itself, all subjects are treated with the same degree of respect.

Dear friend,
I am working on improving myself in all areas of life. At this moment, I am attempting to improve my Wiki posts. You may have noticed how my post from last week pertained to the wrong week's readings. That was a flop on my part...but this week I think I have it down; hence this letter/email styled post. So, as I said before, I am always striving to improve myself because I am a struggling college student who just wants more sleep. I also want to understand our readings better; I tend to have a hard time with them. I sometimes think I Won't Change, and maybe I Am That I Am. It makes me think that Life at War may just be everything that is in and around me. But, To Hell with it. I still think I am improving. You may be hoping that I am about to Rap it Up, but with the need of 200 words, I am just getting started. Also, When I'm Talking There Is Something I Have to Tell You...Eventually Everything Will Happen at Once. Sounds very philosophical am I right? Kind of like Life Studies. If we dive deeper into that phrase, I wonder what it could mean? Perhaps when we die, our life flashes before us and it is all there before us in that instance. Or maybe when life finally is how it should be, we recognize it in an instance. Or maybe I am completely off. I haven't had the chance to listen to the audio for the poem since I am in the library. After reading this post, What Didn't You Understand? Are there ways you think I can improve? Best of luck to you, my friend.

A vinyl record is an analog audio recording that is pressed into vinyl in the shape of a flat disc. The first 12" vinyl LP (long-play) record (the standard record most commonly sold today) was created by Peter Carl Goldmark in 1949 while he worked at Columbia Records. The new material allowed for more songs to be placed on each side of an album and noticeably increased the sound quality from the previously used shellacked hard rubber records.

Defenition
Vinyl records are inscribed with a modulated groove in the shape of a spiral that starts on the edge of the disc, and as the record plays in a clockwise motion, a record needle will follow these grooves, producing sound, until the center of the disc is reached, music ceases, and the disc must be flipped.

There a multiple types of vinyl records, most commonly sold today in the 33 1/3 rpm and 45 rpm speeds. Some other speeds include the 78 and the 16 rpm record, but modern record players are not configured to play these more archaic speeds configurations traditionally only available on shellacked hard rubber records. Today, LPs most often refer to 45rpm records and have a playtime of longer than 40 minutes, which make these the popular choice for full album releases. LPs are larger than EPs (extended-play) in both size and capacity, most commonly coming in a 12" format. EPs are 33 1/3 rpm records that come in sizes ranging from 7"-10" and can only hold a couple songs.

Early History
The first vinyl LP was released in 1930 by RCA Victor, but failed due to lack of affordability and the economic down turn of the Great Depression. Columbia also tried selling vinyl records, but it they didn't catch on until the mid-1940s. The increased interest is credited to the increased cost of shellack during World War II and because radio stations began pressing albums onto vinyl because they were lighter to ship in the mail and didn't break as easily.

Columbia Records began working on improving the vinyl record in 1939. It was Dr. Peter Goldmark and his team's mission to develop a more inexpensive method of pressing vinyl while addressing issues with the modular printing process. It wasn't until June 21st, 1948 that Columbia Records debuted their perfected product at a New York press conference. In the following February of 1949, RCA Victor reentered the vinyl market when they released vinyl 45 rpm EPs, giving us the two popular vinyl record formats of today.

***FECK. I TOTALLY MISUNDERSTOOD THIS WHOLE WIKI THING. I JUST RESEARCHED VINYL RECORDS FOR 2 HOURS INSTEAD OF ADAPTING A NEW ENTRY TO MY UNDERSTANDING OF THE READING, AHHHHHHHHHHHHH. I'LL TRY AGAIN NEXT WEEK. MAY THIS MISTAKE LIVE ON FOREVER IN THIS WIKI. RIP.

A lot of what we do, or maybe everything we do, is a result of want or desire. Christopher Strachey desires his love and wants to emphasize his affection through his "Love Letters." Judd Morrissey wants to illustrate a new way of reading and interaction with a story through "The Jew's Daughter." People post their work, pictures, stories, ideas, and so forth to many different media outlets because they want to be heard, acknowledged, or merely affect others in some way. We also act certain ways because we want certain things or want to be seen a certain way. We are similar to computers this way. Like the want and desire is programmed in us and the code makes certain it is played out. While the want in all of us may produce beautiful works, innovative ideas, and a happy life, it can also cause problems and destruction. What happens when we can't get or do what we want? Or when what we want does not cooperate with our mind or bodies? There's a glitch in my system. I want to let go, but I can't. I want to forget, but I don't. I want to move on, but I'm stuck. So what am I supposed to do? Can we reprogram ourselves to be different from what we are? Upgrade our system? I suppose this is what reading, listening, and learning does for us...but it is just too slow for my liking. But maybe that's just my desire to grow talking.

It is quite strange how we develop different styles of reading. You can read fast, slow, word by word, or all at once. You can read and analyze, or just let the words flow right out of your brain. From young on we learn our own specific style of reading. True, it may change as we grow up and dive into more subjects and different forms of writing, but our general style is somehow embedded in us...or at least this was the recent thought that came to me while reading, "The Library of Babel." From the beginning of the story, I read it with the intent of analyzing the words and making connections to other topics. This intent was amplified when I read, "The universe (which others call the Library)..." Of course! The universe is represented by the Library, and therefore the hexagonal galleries must be different dimensions, or planets, or places in the universe, and so, the different books that are uniquely their own and all made up of the same elements must be human beings, and that must mean the Man of the Book must be God, or Jesus...and I realized I was completely wrong and read what I wanted to see or hear (I mean it's both right?). I realized just how accustomed I am to reading literature in books, and how basic my mind really is. I didn't think to believe that the Library could be a real place, that a place could have all the books and could tell your past, present, and future...or maybe I didn't want to. It's unnerving to think all the information of the universe could be in some place where, if anyone found it, they'd have all the knowledge equivalent of God. But in reality, the Internet is becoming the Library. With so much information from all around the world, who knows what it'll know in the future. Who knows what we'll know in the future. Maybe we'll become like the librarians-in continuous search for answers and meaning...or maybe we'll wither away before that happens, if we're only lucky.

ENG 116B: Introduction to Electronic Literature

What is not electronic literature today? Rather than introduce electronic literature or “e-lit” as a distinct literary category, this course wonders if it’s still possible to consider literature beyond the electronic circuits that characterize the networked present. The creation and study of literature today is facilitated by a range of digital formats and networked consoles, each of which introduce new practices of production, circulation, reception, and reading. Alongside these transformations, we’ll explore a range of new literary genres inhabiting, for example, computer scripts, image macros, flash movies, social media, bandcamp releases, interactive applications, and print on demand books. Thinking through the present, this introduction examines the history and future of literature through the everyday experience of computers and electronic devices. From the history of digital poetics to recent internet publications, we’ll track the development of literature under the influence of computation up to works published in the present, as they emerge throughout the quarter. In lockstep, the course considers the category of “electronic literature” as a way to think about historical works remediated to the internet, in a wide range of (post-)digital formats. The course requires short weekly responses in an open format, as well as a mid-term and final assignment, which may be critical or creative in form, developed in conversation with the instructor. No previous experience in programming, poetry, or literature is required.
