For my final project, I was thinking of taking the transcript from the first game in the Kingdom Hearts video game series and turning all of the dialogue into text messaging format. I will make these fake texts through an app called Yazzy that lets you make fake messages/posts on WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, iPhone SMS, etc. In addition to transcribing this data, I will also replace some of it with emojis or text shorthand. Following this, I will create an ‘interruption’ of sorts whenever an inside joke comes up from within the fandom; for example, as shown in the image provided, an inside joke within the Kingdom Hearts fandom is how much the words “heart, light, and dark/darkness” are brought up within the dialogue, so I have caused an ‘interruption’ here to joke on the presence of that word. All of these messages/interruptions will be divided by when and where they take place in the story, and they will all then be posted to newhive on separate pages in this way. I will add music to the background of all of these pages that comes from that particular part of the game. Additionally, I plan to call this whole thing “Kingdom Hearts 1.16B Final Mix” to make it seem like yet another Kingdom Hearts re-release by Square Enix in order to further distract fans until Kingdom Hearts 3 finally comes out. I will probably write a short description in the beginning as well that also expresses a similar satirical point to this. For the relation to course content, I was initially inspired to do this by Sophia Le Fraga’s “W8ING 4” video. Other works that relate to this are Charles Bernstein’s “Wreading” essays, "The Rise of Memes as an Art Form,” and "Being An English Major, As Told By 'The Office’" with how I am ‘wreading’ the game’s text and inserting fan reactions/memes to express how they feel about the source material. By removing the gameplay, this may also relate to course content dealing with interactive fiction or video games but more in the absence of such things than their actual presence. | For my final project, I was thinking of taking the transcript from the first game in the Kingdom Hearts video game series and turning all of the dialogue into text messaging format.
With this project, one of the points I am trying to make, other than just making fun of Square Enix’s constant re-releases and their refusal to finally release Kingdom Hearts 3, is somewhat similar to a point made in the Transformers Premake video shown in class: that companies will exploit the good will and support of fans as long as it makes them money and keeps them interested in their future products. Also, by possibly including inside jokes/memes that critique the game or make a problematic joke about it, I will also be demonstrating how toxic practices like sexism continue to exist in video games and/or their fanbases to this day.
