Full Bleed: A Mourning Letter for the Printed Page (Sync, 2019)

Full Bleed: A Mourning Letter for the Printed Page, is a book-length creative research project, published in Berlin by Sync in 2019, edited by Andreas Bülhoff as part of the SYNC project. Full Bleed explores the Victorian tradition of the black-edged mourning letter alongside a range of material metaphors for the page—borders, margins, bleeds, edges — and the uncanny disappearance and rematerialization of the printed “page” as PDF file. When printed, the black-edged margins of the digital object are coded to disappear, rendering digital and print editions fully incommensurate: the losses annotated in the margins lost altogether. A citational inventory of bleeds reading supernatural fantasy alongside the history of the book, cultural margins paired with academic marginalia, and the politics of print in the post-digital publishing practices of a digital milieu.
